BEST 5/6-BERTH 2006
If there’s one thing a large family needs, it’s space – and
that can also mean space away from each other. The twin-axle
Ace Supreme Sunstar meets this need with a separate area for kids
at the van’s rear. The layout isn’t unique to Swift (Lunar does a similar
model and Avondale’s version won this award last year - see below) but
following several improvements for 2006 it is now more practical and
better equipped than its rivals, and great value to boot.
The Sunstar now has two fixed bunks as standard (last year’s upper
bunk was was an extra-cost option); the fridge capacity has
been increased to 107 litres; there’s wiring for an optional
radio/CD/DVD/MP3 player; and the spaceframe seat construction
allows the whole of the bed box fronts to drop down for unhindered
access to the space within.
Storage provision is plentiful throughout. The Swift Group’s huge
upper lockers abound, and even the kids get their own cupboard.
The kitchen has loads of workspace, which can be boosted by stowing
the removable draining board. The side washroom does intrude a little
into the gangway, but it’s forgivable when you consider that it contains
a separate shower cubicle.
Equipment is generous, too, with a microwave, inboard water
tank, stabiliser, spare wheel, jack and removable carpets among
the standard kit. An alarm, stereo, alloys and AL-KO Secure wheel
lock remain on the options list, but this helps to explain this year’s
dramatic £1500 drop in price to £16,285 – the other feature that
makes the Sunstar our winner in this category.
Overall, the Sunstar is a great-value tourer that’s also
more affordable than its slightly better equipped siblings.
